Ethical Consumer Movement participates in first Labor Caucus

Although they may not have realized it, Democratic National Convention attendees who took a side trip to historic Independence Hall, rode a coaster at Six Flags Great America or raised a glass at Coin’s Restaurant and Pub were a part of #BuyBlue, the Ethical Consumer Movement which took over the City of Brotherly Love during this historic week.

Labor 411 joined fellow labor supporters Senator Elizabeth Warren, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and Unite Here Vice President and DNC Vice Chair Maria Elena Durazo this week at the Democratic National Convention’s first Labor Caucus. The goal was to recruit 50,000 liberal, politically astute convention goers to educate and empower consumers to use their spending power to strengthen the middle class. Through its #BuyBlue campaign, Labor 411makes it simple: By spending money on products and services from employers that treat and pay their employees fairly, consumers are doing their part to save and create good American jobs. Think Blue, Vote Blue, Buy Blue.

During the convention’s first-ever Labor Caucus, Labor 411 President Cherri Senders championed the power of responsible spending

“It’s estimated that delegates and supporters spent more than $250 million over the course of the four days at the convention,” Senders said. “If even just a fraction of that money went to businesses, retail and entertainment where workers are treated fairly and responsibly, we could make a major impact in the American economy. Through the Buy Blue campaign and our city specific retail guides, Labor 411 makes it easier than ever to spend responsibly.”

Founded in 2008, Labor 411’s print and online guides now include more than 10,000 listings covering hotels, restaurants, retail outlets and other businesses in four of the nation’s top consumer markets: Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Labor 411’s website (www.labor411.org), allows consumers to target where their shopping dollars can support living-wage companies and their communities and avoid retailers that do not treat their workers well.
