Conversation - The Attack On Sep 11On his Practice

Jay M. Levin is a principal-level attorney in Offit Kurman’s Philadelphia office. An experienced appellate lawyer with over thirty years of experience in briefing and arguing appeals in state and federal court, Jay focuses his practice on representing policyholders in disputes with insurance companies involving all types of insurance coverage. His extensive litigation experience comprises multi-million dollar property insurance coverage cases, including suits involving policy construction and application, cause and origin, valuation, and business interruption issues. Jay has been ranked as a Band 1 lawyer in Insurance—Pennsylvania (Chambers USA, 2015-2016), recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America for Insurance Law, and selected for inclusion in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers.

Jay recently spoke with us about his background, his legal perspective, and the ways in which he has served his clients at Offit Kurman.

OFFIT KURMAN: How did you get your start as an attorney?

JAY LEVIN: I decided to become a lawyer very, very young. I always knew I wanted to be a trial lawyer, from a very young age. My father was a law professor. Many of our friends were either law professors or practicing lawyers, and I was around lawyers as I was growing up and in college, then obviously in law school, and I always knew I wanted to be in particular a trial lawyer as opposed to any other kind of lawyer. I just found it to be the most interesting and most exciting part of law.

Q. What was it about litigation specifically?

A. I like the fact that, in certain ways, it’s a very high stakes game. You play by rules—or at least you’re supposed to play by rules. There’s a winner, there’s a loser. I have a very strong competitive streak and I like being in situations where you can win or lose. In transactional-type work, the goal is to have everyone be a winner, and it requires, I think, a slightly different mindset. In litigation, you’re going for the win. Most cases settle, but if you try to prepare it as if you’re going to go to trial, just in case you do go to trial, you’re ready; and being on my feet in court is really the most fun part of my practice.

Q. How many cases have you handled?

A. I haven’t kept track, but over my career—including arbitrations, because a lot of what I do is in arbitration—I have probably taken a hundred cases all the way through.
