Miles Berger, chairman of the Berger Organization, will be honored for his support of Newark residents and the future of the city and its youth, at the fifth annual UNCF Masked Ball. The event, presented by UNCF New Jersey Area office, raises funds to send deserving minority students to college. The event will be held on June 22, 2017 at 6 p.m. in the Tri-State Ballroom of the Robert Treat Hotel, 50 Park Place in Newark.

“We are honoring Miles for his investment in better futures for our young people in the Newark community. His business endeavors and deep appreciation for Newark have led to the City’s continuing renaissance,” said Ngozi Emenyeonu, area director of UNCF Newark. “Through his businesses, he has provided employment opportunities for many Newark residents; and through his civic and philanthropic engagement, he has supported numerous causes including education and UNCF.” Emenyeonu stated that the fundraising goal for this year’s campaign is $400,000.

Berger has been a strong advocate and key figure in the revitalization of downtown Newark, through his multi-faceted real estate company and his personal commitment to restoring the luster to New Jersey's largest city. The Berger Organization’s portfolio includes many office and hotel properties in Newark, including the Robert Treat Hotel, and is developing new hotels from distressed properties that have blighted the downtown streetscape for many years. He has also been a staunch supporter of Newark’s students through various programs sponsored by his company. Berger will join fellow honorees Calvin West, Newark’s first African-American councilman-at-large, Hon. Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., Essex County Executive and Phil Murphy, the former ambassador to Germany under President Obama.

Hosted by a diverse group of corporate sponsors and local businesses, the Masked Ball brings together celebrities, dignitaries, civic leaders and public officials, volunteers, alumni and others who support UNCF’s mission of investing in America’s future by getting students to and through college. According to its website,UNCF has helped more than 445,000 students earn a college degree since 1944. The featured speaker at the Masked Ball will be a student from the area who will talk about the impact of receiving a college scholarship.

The Masked Ball will feature a VIP Reception for the honorees and invited guests, a general reception, a lavish dinner, and dancing and live entertainment from Gordon Chambers, a Grammy-winning songwriter, producer and recording artist. Chambers has worked with top names in the music world, including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Brandy, Usher, Jamie Foxx, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and Marc Anthony. He has appeared at The White House, The Essence Music Festival, The Congressional Black Caucus, The Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center.
