Verizon and Fujitsu Receive Global Telecoms Business Award for Low-Cost, Fiber-Based Ethernet Solution

6/8/17

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. & RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Verizon and Fujitsu Network Communications received the Global Telecoms Business award for Wholesale Service Innovation at the GTB Telecoms Innovation Summit & Awards event in London on May 23, 2017. The Wholesale Service Innovation award recognizes projects involving two or more telecoms companies aimed at improving or extending coverage or service.

Verizon and Fujitsu received the award for Verizon’s VzON/EPL – Optical Extension (VzON-OE) service which delivers point-to-point, and point-to-multipoint connectivity of voice, video and data transport on Verizon’s network. Fujitsu’s FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP) powers the offering.

As the Carrier Ethernet market continues to evolve, and competition increases with the growing need to control costs, service providers are seeking to leverage economies of scale to more efficiently manage network CapEx and OpEx dollars.

Verizon’s VzON/EPL – Optical Extension (VzON-OE) service delivers high bandwidth connectivity for enterprise and wireless providers by leveraging dedicated Ethernet transport with direct fiber, and native Ethernet interfaces without the need for a network interface device (NID). The solution removes most of the requirements for customer premises electronics associated with a standard VzON/EPL solution.

The Optical Extension service provides an innovative, low-cost, fiber-based dedicated Ethernet solution that offers competitive pricing and helps to reduce subscribers’ total cost of ownership for growing bandwidth needs when compared to Ethernet network alternatives.

“We’re not focused on awards, we’re focused on serving our customers during their business transformation,” said Brendan Gunn, director of product marketing for Verizon Partner Solutions. “Our work with Fujitsu provides the communications services our customers need cost-effectively, securely and reliably.”

“We value our longstanding relationship with Verizon,” said Doug Moore, chief operating officer at Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. “We will continue striving to deliver solutions that help Verizon take new services to market quickly and cost-efficiently.”

Verizon plans to begin trials of its new Ethernet Optical Extension service this year, with official product launch planned for summer 2017.
