Pennsylvania Student Senator Elected President Pro Tempore of The American Legion Boys Nation

7/24/17

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--By a close vote, Corey Eisert-Wlodarczyk was chosen Senate President Pro Tempore of The American Legion Boys Nation.

“I never thought this would happen,” said the Erie, Pa. native. “[This position will] instill in me a sense of pride and leadership, as well as several management skills, and being able to develop those skills in such an elite environment is definitely going to help propel myself personally.”

As President Pro Tempore, Eisert-Wlodarczyk’s responsibilities include presiding as head of the Boys Nation Senate in the absence of its Vice President as well as appointing a Chief Clerk of the Senate, Senate Parliamentarian, Senate Chaplain and a Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate.

Boys Nation, a signature program of the nation’s largest veterans’ service organization, provides an intensive week-long, hands-on education in American politics and the legislative system for a select group of high school students each year.

“I came here acting as a sponge. Trying to experience as much as I can,” said Eisert-Wlodarczyk. “Being able to take part in this is an absolute amazing experience.”

The incoming senior at McDowell High School is undecided on which university he plans on attending, but his short list includes American University, George Washington University and the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is considering a career in politics, law and/or military service.

Two representatives from each of the 49 Boys States represent their home state as a senator. The senators caucus at the beginning of the session, organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills, allowing delegates to learn the proper legislative procedures according to the U.S. Senate. Activities include mock party conventions, legislative elections, debates, speeches and visits to Capitol Hill and other historical sites. Delegates will also visit the offices of their state’s respective members of Congress and present bills of their own creation.

Since Boys Nation began in 1946, a number of its graduates have been elected to public office, including presidents, congressmen, state governors and state legislators.
