The 20-story property in Downtown Newark, known as the New Jersey Bell Headquarters Building with its distinctive art-deco brick and sandstone façade, is being repurposed to include rental homes and 60,000 square feet of office and retail space. The historic property was built in 1929 and was designed by world renowned architect, Ralph Walker. In 2005, 540 Broad Street’s art deco facade and lobby were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Redesigned by Inglese Architecture + Engineering, along with interior design firmCetraRuddy, the 436,000-square-foot tower will feature 265 mixed-income apartments in a mix of studios, one-, two-and three-bedrooms. Amenities will include a state-of-the-art fitness center; storage for yoga equipment; a basketball court; game room; bicycle storage; laundry room with heavy duty washers; and dryers and 24/7 doorman.
