United Way of Chester County and FamilyWize Use Data to Help the Community Battle Heart Disease, Diabetes & Mental Illness

10/12/17

United Way of Chester County and FamilyWize recently announced that Chester County members have saved $720, 826 on prescription heart disease, diabetes and mental health medications through the organizations’ partnership. The results come as United Way and FamilyWize launch a new aggressive, data-driven chapter in its joint community initiatives across the country. Using targeted data reports created by FamilyWize, local United Ways can now better evaluate what assistance their communities need most, rather than trying to piece together a story using only national-level and state-level reporting.

Key community highlights from the data report for Chester County include:

• $108,278 savings on prescription heart disease & diabetes medications

• $224,638 savings on prescription mental health medications

• 3,635 total community members helped

The FamilyWize program is free and saved participants an average of around 40 percent off of their prescription medications in 2016. Accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide and covering all FDA-approved prescription medications, the FamilyWize card has no eligibility requirements and is available to anyone. To sign up for the program, visit https://familywize.org/free-prescription-discount-card, download the Familywize Apple or Android mobile app, or print out the card. A limited number of cards are also available at United Way of Chester County.

Nearly 1,000 United Ways have collaborated with FamilyWize to help more than 10 million Americans save more than $1 billion, with an average savings of around 40 percent since the partnership began.

“Many individuals and families in our community continue to struggle to stay healthy due to the high cost of their prescription medications,” said Claudia Hellebush, president & CEO of United Way of Chester County. “Our partnership with FamilyWize has allowed us to offer resources to our community members for accessing more affordable healthcare, especially in the heart disease, diabetes and mental health therapy areas. The impact we’re making is changing lives, and we look forward to supporting many more families in the years to come.”

“We are proudly launching a new chapter of our strong partnership with United Way,” added Dan Barnes, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of FamilyWize. “The first step in helping our communities is knowing as much as we can about the families and individuals who live there. Through this localized research we are reaching millions of Americans, all of whom are searching for ways to afford their medicine in this difficult healthcare landscape.”
