On World Food Day, 800 Local Students Packed 100,000 Meals to Aid in Hurricane Relief

10/19/17

In the days following disasters like hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, the lack of basic survival necessities, such as food and water, serve as a barrier to health and the recovery process. On World Food Day, 800 kindergarten – 12th grade students came together to make a difference by packing 100,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger. The meals are planned for use in hurricane disaster relief over the coming weeks and months, adding to 9,000 meals already provided to St. Croix.

At Léman Manhattan Preparatory School, packing began at 8:45 a.m. in the school’s Broad Street Ballroom. Nearly 400 students, faculty, staff and parents participated throughout the day and packaged more than 25,000 meals—exceeding their collective goal to join New Jersey’s Eisenhower School and Rutgers Preparatory School to pack over 100,000 meals.

Since its inception, Rise Against Hunger—a 4-star Charity Navigator rated organization—has packaged more than 300,000,000 meals. And while tremendous strides have been made over the last two decades to end hunger, there is more to do, and Rise Against Hunger is dedicated to leading the way to zero hunger by the year 2030.
