South Jersey Innovation Center (SJIC), home to stimulating STEM and innovative child enrichment programs and the South Jersey Chess Club, is excited to recognize Abhi Mishra on breaking the record as the youngest ever National Chess Master. A regular player at the South Jersey Chess Club and among the competitive students of the South Jersey Innovation Center, he achieved this honor in April at the age of 9 years 2.5 months, overcoming his predecessor by 2.5 months. Abhi joins the likes of Bobby Fischer, who was the only U.S. World Champion and became a master at the age of 14 years old.

This new title is just one of Abhi’s many chess achievements. A competitive player since the age of 5 years old, he currently holds the record for youngest ever National Chess Expert, crossing the USCF Rating 2000 at the age of 7 years 6 months and breaking the prior record by 6 months. Abhi earned silver medals at both the 2017 World Cadet Championships in Brazil and 2017 Pan Am Youth Championships in Costa Rica ~ to name a few. At 9 years old, he also enjoys other hobbies including solving puzzles and watching movies.

“Abhi has be a regular player at our tournaments, including the Dubeck Cup and monthly super quads for a while now,” says Dov Gorman, Executive Director of the South Jersey Innovation Center and home of the South Jersey Chess Club. “It is both an honor and pleasure each time he joins us. Not only for his skill but his enthusiasm and competitive spirit inspires all the players – both young and old. He’s a great role model for all of us.”
